PL376 : The Class : Week 2

Tourism Experiences and Impacts: Rural and Mountain Areas

Echostar broadcast: 29 January: The Rocky Mountains

Week 2 Assignment Due: Friday, 4 February (25 points)

First Weekly Check-In Due: Sunday, 6 February, or sooner (3 points)

Objectives: This week we are again focussing on an example of the tourism planning process by looking at what I consider to be one of the best published examples of sustainable community tourism planning around. (There others who have done this kind of work, but it does not always get published.)

To complete this Module successfully, please complete the following activities in the order shown below. There are TWO PARTS to this week's Module:

PART 1

BROADCAST LECTURE < RealPlayer Video Link > < Dr. Lew's Lecture Slides Only > - may be done at the same time or before Textbook Readings 1 and 2:

  • DishTV students are required to watch the broadcast of this lecture on 29 January 2000.
  • WWW students are required to click on the link above at watch the broadcast in RealPlayer format on the WWW. This will open a small window in which a poor visual quality, but acceptable sound quality playing of the lecture will be heard.

WEB ACTIVITY 1: Read "Section I: Components of the Tourism Industry" - pp. 1-6 - in: Planning Guide to Tourism Development for Rural Areas by the Arizona Department of Commerce
- Available through NAU Cline Library Electronic Reserves -- click on the Library link at the top of any page, then click on PL376 in the upper left under the words Course Readings

TEXTBOOK READING 1: Read Chapters 14 (Coastal Areas and the Sea), 15 (Rural Areas) and 17 (Mountain Regions) in Sustainable Tourism Management (including the "Case Studies"). Each of these chapters is rather short.

TEXTBOOK READING 2: Read Chapter 10 (Curry Country sustainable nature-based tourism project) in Sustainable Tourism: A Geographical Perspective.

After you have done these readings, do the following web activity:

WEB ACTIVITY 2: Browse the website and links for one or more the three principle Curry County communities:

ASSIGNMENT 1 (20 Points): Answer these two questions:

  1. What do you see as the major lessons of the Curry County case study?
  2. Did the Curry County community website reflect the sustainable tourism work discussed in BOTH of the readings? Explain your answer.

You are to place your answer either on the NAU Virtual Conference Center.

If you have not yet registered and accessed the VCC, please go to the Communicate Page for instructions.

Process and Expectations: I expect several paragraphs for each question. The first question could be answered in the form of a list -- but each point or lesson should be explained. Be sure to relate your assessment of the website(s) to BOTH of the readings and the video (I will be looking for this). You should type your answers in a word processor first. Spell and grammar check what you typed (I will deduct points for poor spelling and grammar). Then post your your answer on the VCC by either (1) cutting and pasting your text into a the VCC. [If you know HTML formatting, you can also cut and past an HTML file.]

or click here

Click the button above to go to the NAU Virtual Conference Center. The greenish button will open the VCC in a new, floating window so that you will have two windows open on your computer: one with the VCC and the other with this instructions page. The "click here" link will open the VCC in this instructions page window.

PART 2

ASSIGNMENT 2 (5 points): FINAL CLASS PROJECT

It is now time to start thinking about your Final Class Project. The project will require that you create a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan on the WWW. If you do not know how to create Web Pages, you will learn that next week.

For this week, you are to decide on a community for which you want to develop a plan. This should be a relatively small community (population under 75,000) that you are very familiar with and for which you can obtain information on the WWW. You have two options, which should also be discussed:

  1. - You can undertake a general tourism plan for the community -- identifying issues, goals, markets and potential facilities and attractions. (Much of the class material will be focussed in this direction.)
  2. - You can do a major private project or development plan (like a "green resort") that will be located in or adjacent to the community. (You will need to take the community's concerns and characteristics into account in planning your project.)
  3. - I am open to other approaches beyond these -- but you should discuss this option with me in advance of this assignment.

For this week's assignment, you are required to tell me which community you intend to work on by E-mail. < Alan.Lew@nau.edu >

Let me know if you have any questions.

NOTE ON E-MAILS: Do not combine assignments in a single e-mail. Send Part 2 to me in one e-mail message, and send your Week 2 Check-in to me in a SEPARATE e-mail message. This is because I file each of these e-mail messages in a different location on my computer. Maintain this practice of separate e-mail message throughout this semester. Thanks -- Dr. Lew
