Two of the following three readings are on Electronic Reserve with the NAU Cline Library. Click on the hotlinked title below, or click on the Library link at the top of any page, then click on PL376 in the upper left under the words Course Readings.

TEXTBOOK READING 1: "Chapter 2: The Nature and Scope of Sustainable Tourism" (pp.13-23) and "Chapter 4: Towards a New Approach to Sustainable Tourism Management" (pp. 41-44) in Sustainable Tourism Management (by John Swarbrooke)

TEXTBOOK READING 2: "Chapter 14: Sustainable Tourism Development and Planning in New Zealand: Local Government Responses" (by Stephen Page and Kaye Thorn) in Sustainable Tourism: A Geographical Perspective (edited by C.Michael Hall and Alan A. Lew, pp. 173-184)

The first reading will give you a quick, yet comprehensive, overview of the range of issues in sustainable tourism. The second reading will present New Zealand as a case study. This second reading was the principle source of information presented in the Echostar broadcast discussion of New Zealand. Additional reference sources are provided below.

AFTER you complete these two textbook readings, continue on to the Web Activity:

WEB ACTIVITY: Now take a visit to ONE (1) of the Regional Council websites in New Zealand. Especially visit the "Environment" and the "Plans" sections found on the homepage of each Council.

http://www.orc.govt.nz/ - Otago Regional Council (Dunedin area of the South Island)

http://www.crc.govt.nz/ - Canterbury Regional Council (Christchurch area of the South Island)

http://www.arc.govt.nz/ - Aukland Regional Council (Aukland area of the North Island)

These three Councils had information that was particularly suited to this assignments. Other regional councils, might also have similar information. If you are particularly interested in a different region in New Zealand, you can check the other Council websites out on Yahoo at http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/New_Zealand/Government/Local_Government/Councils/Regional_Councils/

Optional Additional Reference Materials:

ASSIGNMENT 1 (20 points): Answer the Following Question in an E-MAIL sent to Dr. Lew at Alan.Lew@nau.edu

(1) Which Regional Council website did you visit?

(2) How does sustainable tourism fit into the activities of the New Zealand Regional Council you visited? Be specific. (Note that tourism is seldom mentioned directly, but in many ways the concept permeates many of the Council's activities.)

(3) Based on the text readings (mostly the first reading by Swarbrooke), how well does your Regional Council utilize a 'sustainability' approach to its activities? How could their activities incorporate more 'sustainability'?

(4) How did the website you visited reflect the findings from the second text reading (by Page and Thorn)?

Process and Expectations: I expect one or two paragraphs for questions 2, 3 and 4. You should type your answers in a word processor first. Spell and grammar check what you typed (I will deduct points for poor spelling and grammar). Then send your answer to me by either (1) cutting and pasting your text into an e-mail message, or (2) sending the file as an attachment. Please send attachments only in MSWord, WordPerfect or ASCII TEXT formats.

ASSIGNMENT 2 (5 points): Go to the VCC and Introduce yourself.

At a minimum discuss:

  1. Your background related to this class (in tourism and/or planning, if any)
  2. Your particular interests in taking this class (why you took it / what you hope to get out of it)

- Put this in the Week 1 Assignment Folder on the VCC.
- Go to the Communicate Page if you need instructions on how to logon to the VCC and how to subscribe to the PL431 conference.

NOTE on E-MAILS: Do not combine assignments in a single e-mail. Send the assignment above to me in one e-mail message, and send your First Weekly Check-in to me in a SEPARATE e-mail message. This is because I file each of these e-mail messages in a different location on my computer. Maintain this practice of separate e-mail message throughout this semester. Thanks -- Dr. Lew

E-MAIL WARNING: Every time my e-mail address appears, it is hot linked (like below) so that many of you can send me an e-mail address by clicking on the hot link. You can ONLY do this if your computer's Web Browser is setup to know your e-mail address and e-mail computer server. If you are working from home, this should not be a problem. If you are working in a computer lab, you most probably CAN NOT send me an e-mail using these hotlinks -- even if your computer acts like it actually worked!!!
[Go to the HELP page for instructions on how to enable e-mail hotlinks in Netscape.]
ALSO: Always "CC:" to yourself
a copy of the e-mails you send me so that you have a backup copy in case I do not receive your message/assignment. -- Dr. Lew (Alan.Lew@nau.edu)
