Computer Hardware

To take advantage of the multi-media elements in this web site, it is recommended that you have at least the following:

  • 486 PC or better, or Macintosh (PowerPC recommended)
  • Modem (14.4 minimum; higher speed recommended) or other connection to the internet
  • Sound capability (ie: a sound card & speakers) is highly recommended -- contact Dr. Lew if you do not have sound
  • Monitor capable of displaying at least 256 colours
  • Mouse and Keyboard

Browser

The latest versions of Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer can be downloaded and used for free.

Throughout the course, you may be asked to send email to the instructor or other students. Make sure your browser is configured properly.

Student Internet Access / DANA

New students are required to obtain an account on the student unix computer DANA. DANA gives NAU students, who agree to abide by proper ethical standards, access to the internet including electronic mail, the Cline library on-line catalogue, world wide web home pages (httpd), and usenet news.

Accessing these sort of Internet services requires establishing an electronic identity (essentially an electronic mail address). This can be done by acquiring a computer account on the DANA machine. Any currently enrolled student, who is willing to use these resources responsibly, is permitted an account on the DANA machine.

If you are an Arizona Resident, NAU has several local modem pools throughout the state. If these modem numbers are not local to your area, you should select a local internet service provider (ISP) to avoid long distance phone charges.

You are responsible for paying any phone charges (long distance and local) and ISP fees incurred as a result of taking this web course.

E-Mail Setup

E-MAIL WARNING: Every time Dr. Lew's e-mail address appears, it is hot linked (like below) so that many of you can send me an e-mail address by clicking on the hot link. You can ONLY do this if your computer's Web Browser is setup to know your e-mail address and e-mail computer server. If you are working from home, this should not be a problem. If you are working in a computer lab, you most probably CAN NOT send me an e-mail using these hotlinks -- even if your computer acts like it actually worked!!!

ALSO: Always "CC:" to yourself a copy of the e-mails you send me so that you have a backup copy in case I do not receive your message/assignment. -- Dr. Lew (Alan.Lew@nau.edu)

SETTING UP NETSCAPE to enable e-mail hotlinks

These instructions will only work with DANA accounts. If you have a different ISP (Internet Service Provider), then contact them. The process should be similar, but with different information in some parts. The process should also be similar for MS Internet Explorer.

1. Open Netscape and click on Edit on the top-bar menu. Then click on Preferences.

2. Double click on Mail and Newsgroups to see the menu items under this title. Then click on Mail Servers.

3. In the Incoming Mail Servers box, click on Add and then type in dana.ucc.nau.edu

4. In the Outgoing Mail Servers box, click on Add and then type in mailgate.nau.edu

5. Click on OK. That should do it. If you have Netscape Communicator, you can use it to read, send and store all your e-mails -- but that is more than I want to go into here.

WebWizard Help (by Dr. Lew)

TIP: Write your response in a Word Processor first, then copy it over to the website.

INSTRUCTIONS: See Week 3 for instructions how to (1) Create your WebWizard Webpage, and (2) Post/Publish to Your Webpage. In particular, remember these last two steps in Posting/Publishing (students tend to forget one of both of these):

- After you have put your text into the box, hit the "Submit Coursework Document" at the bottom of the page. [Running the spell check is optional, but recommended if you did not do this on your word processor.] This will return you to the "Edit Coursework" page.

- When you have finished Submitting your Coursework Document, click on the "Return to the Page Setup" link at the bottom of the page. From the Setup page, click on the "Publish, then view your site in a new browser window" link in the pink box at the bottom of the page.

When you click on this a new window opens and you are able to instantly see your webpage update, along with anyone else who goes to your website at that time. The purpose of this link is to (1) upload the file you were working on to your webpage (it is not on your webpage when you are working on it), and (2) allows you to confirm that your work is posted properly. Look at the the URL at the top of your web browser, it should be:

http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~xxx/WebWizard/...

The xxx is your Dana account name. If you do not see this then you are not looking at the published webpage.

PROBLEMS: If, after doing the above, you still think you are having problems posting, you should send a copy of your assignment to Dr. Lew by e-mail (Alan.Lew@nau.edu), as well as posting/publishing it (or attempting to post it).

If you need more help, then contact click on the "Gary Karcz" link at the bottom left of the Webwizard login page (or anyone else who is listed there in the future). Webwizard was created by OTLE - the NAU Office of Teaching and Learning Effectiveness.

OTLE Tools - http://www.nau.edu/~otle/tools/ - NAU's Office of Teaching and Learning Effectiveness (the creators of WebWizard) have several links here to webpages and resources that may be of help .

OTLE Web Workshop - http://nauonline.nau.edu/support/workshop/ - An Online tutorial on how to create your own web pages. This is teaches you how to create a web page separate from WebWizard -- which give you a lot more flexibility in how your page looks.
