Group Communication in this course is accomplished via the NAU Virtual Conference Center. ALL STUDENTS in PL376 MUST BE REGISTERED FOR THE VCC BY WEEK 2 of the class -- The VCC will be used to post your week 2 assignment. Instructions to Log On:Click the following button to go to the NAU Virtual Conference Center. From the main NAU VCC page, login-in, and then enter the class conference.
When you enter the Virtual Conference Center for the First Time, you will click on the word "Register" to register your userid name and password. To register you enter:
NOTE: The program will immediately ask you for the user ID and password you just created. This is normal. Enter the user ID and password you just created to get into the Virtual Conference Center. - When you go into the conference for the first time, you will be on the Personal Information Page. On this page, you must enter your full name. You are requested to enter your e-mail address, although this is not mandatory if you want to keep your e-mail address private. If you put in your e-mail address, make sure it is complete. All DANA addresses are in the form xxx@DANA.UCC.NAU.EDU. You may fill out the other items if you choose. - When you finish the Personal Information Page, go to the Caucus Center, which will take you into the NAU Online Virtual Conference Center. - Now that you are registered, you will always arrive at this page when you come into the conference center. Choose "A list of all conferences" and click on GGR346 (the Conference name). When you first enter the class conference you should click the "YES" button next to "Make me a member of the conference, and add it to my Personal Conference List." - When you come into the NAU Online Virtual Conference Center from now on, you will be asked to enter your userid and password, so be sure to record this information. If you would like more information about features of the Virtual
Conference Center, click on the Green "Help"
button at the top of any conference page and click 'Caucus Tutorial'.
OTHER VCC NOTES Sharing a computer access the VCC: If you are sharing a computer with your roommate, be aware that the VCC is set to retain user information for 240 minutes. This means, that when one of you is finished, you cannot completely logoff for 240 minutes (4 hours) so that the other person can get on. The one workaround for this is to use two browsers. One of you could access the VCC with Netscape and the other with MS Internet Explorer. (Or you could use two different versions of Netscape on the same computer.) This will allow each of you to access the VCC without having to wait for it to time out. (The reason for the long time out is to allow students to complete their VCC assignments before they are automatically logged off the system.) For Telephone Help on the VCC, call one of these support desks:
SUB-GROUPS - Later in the semester, students *may* be assigned to separate and smaller groups on the VCC. Each of these groups would be a separate Conference that you would need to subscribe to. If we do this, you would need to follow the Subscribe directions above, and summarized again here: Find out which VCC Group you have been assigned to. Then go to the VCC
and 'Become a Member' of that group. For example, if your are assigned
to Group 3, you need to: PL376-L E-Mail Discussion List All students for whom I have an email address will be automatically subscribed to the PL376-L discussion list. This list can be used by anyone in the class to send messages to everyone else in the class. All messages will be moderated by me, which means I see them first and decide whether or not to send them on to the entire list. I will use this list often to answer student questions and to make announcements. You can tell when you have been subscribed to PL376-L by the automatic message that you will receive in your e-mail informing you of this (check your e-mail to see if you have this message). If you have not received this message, or if you have only recently added this course, you will need to send me an e-mail message ASAP stating (1) your name and (2) your e-mail address. Alan.Lew@nau.edu Other Sustainable Tourism E-Mail Discussion Lists The Green Travel Homepage covers ecotourism and has information on joining the Green-Travel Mailing List, which provides frequent (though not too frequent) e-mail announcement and discussions on ecotourism related topics. A few of other Mail/Discussion Lists that you might also consider are the following, none of which has as large a flow of traffic as Green-Travel: IGUST - Sustainable Tourism Study Group of the International Geographical Congress (Dr. Lew can personally subscribe you to this one.) STRING - Sustainable Tourism Research INterest Group TOURISMANTHROPOLOGY - Tourism Commission of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Science RTSNET-L - Recreation, Tourism and Sport Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographer TRINET - Tourism Researchers Network - the largest academically oriented tourism discussion list. To subscribe you will be asked to provide information about your research experience. You do not need to have a strong research background, but be aware that whatever you send will be distributed to the entire list. These have been set up for PL376, but I have no plans to use them at the present time. Students, however, can use these at anytime, if they wish. -- Dr. Lew Every course at NAU has an associated newsgroup. The address for the Flagstaff Section of this course's newsgroup is: news: nau.classes.s00.pl.376-01.
